I’ve had many a bad haircut and no one has ever given me a treat…just sympathetic looks or the “side eye”. Since I am the cause of Zoe’s bad hair day, I decided to absolve myself by making something special for her. Zoe loves peanut butter cookies and bacon like I love peanut butter and chocolate. If I combine the two, maybe it’ll be like a canine version of Reese’s Cups. Because I’d never made dog treats, I had to do some research. www.dogtreatkitchen.com has a wealth of dog treat recipes. I used their peanut butter dog biscuit recipe as a base for Zoe’s treats.
Zoe’s Peanut Butter & Bacon Treats
Makes 3 dozen 1″x 2″ treats
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup quick cooking oats
2 tablespoons unsalted peanut butter
1 strip of crisp bacon, crumbled
1 tablespoon bacon grease
1/2 cup hot chicken stock, low sodium
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place all ingredients, except hot water, in a food processor. Pulse until well mixed and crumbly. With processor running, add hot chicken stock and allow to form dough, about 1 minute. Remove from processor, and roll dough between two sheets of parchment. Roll to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into strips with a pastry wheel. On a parchment lined baking sheet, place treats 1 inch apart, prick holes in treats with a fork or a toothpick, bake for 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool. Store in an airtight container or ziploc bag for up to 1 week. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
Zoe loved, loved, loved these treats!
If you like the packaging…I made the tag on Microsoft Publisher(2″ circle template), Paper Ribbon, 1 sheet Kraft Tissue, 1 small clear cello bag
