If I were a hoarder, my thing would probably be pretty dish towels and aprons.  It never fails that if I’m in a store that has housewares, I can’t leave until I’ve browsed through the aprons and dish towels.  In places like, Pottery Barn, Anthropologie, Williams-Sonoma, or Sur la Table, I can usually come to my senses, and leave before purchasing a $40 apron or $20 dish towels.  Not so much will power in Target or HomeGoods!  I mean, $4 for a 2pk of lovely dish towels!  After a recent HomeGoods excursion, I picked up some dish towels and decided to have the best of both worlds…dish towel aprons!

They’re so easy to make, I decided to complete a video of the process.  Remember?  I’m supposed to be getting Alyson ready to fly, she’ll be leaving the nest next summer.  She needs to know how to make an apron.  Sure, she’s not going to need one in the dorm but, I have to start somewhere 🙂

Dish Towels(30×20), 2 Yards Grosgrain Ribbon(7/8-inch width), Fray Check & Thread.  Start by applying Fray Check to the cut ends of the ribbon, allowing to dry at least 15 minutes before sewing.

Center ribbon and pin even with dish towel edge, leaving 21inches in overhang on each side to create apron ties.

Sew atop ribbon, as close to edge as possible.

Repeat process at bottom of ribbon.  Trim threads…All done!

To make the apron you will need:

1 dish towel(30×20), if you choose a pattern, make sure that it looks good turned on it’s side
7/8-inch width ribbon, 2 yards
thread, matched with ribbon
Fray Check

Trim ribbon edges(angled), and apply a small line of Fray Check to the cut edges.  Allow to dry for at least 15 minutes before sewing apron.

When ready, center ribbon along one long side of the dish towel.  Make sure that “ties” will be the same length on each side.  Pin ribbon in place, using a pin every 2 inches, and making sure that the ribbon edge is even with the dish towel edge.(Note: You will have approximately 21 inches of ribbon overhang on each side for ties.)

With ribbon side up, sew as close to the edge as possible, attaching the ribbon to the dish towel.  Repeat sewing process at bottom of ribbon.  Cut away threads.  Cook something good!
