Buttermilk Glazed Pumpkin Cake with Cinnamon Whipped Cream |
About 22 years ago, the first holiday that we celebrated as newlyweds was Thanksgiving. I was so looking forward to creating our own Thanksgiving meal…after all, I could really cook! But, being dutiful children to three households, we celebrated it three times in one day! Don’t get me wrong, nothing beats my mom’s roasted hens and cornbread dressing(she likes hens better than turkey…they make a richer dressing), sweet potato custard, squash casserole, green beans, ham, potato salad, rolls, and everything else that makes up her bountiful buffet. Repeat that meal, sans roasted hens, at my mother-in-laws home and then on to my father-in-laws home.
Since we knew that all of those visits would be filled with traditional Thanksgiving fare, at home we’d prepare things that had caught our eye during the year…dishes from television, blogs, magazines, or restaurants plus our Thanksgiving favorites. Eventually, without realizing it, we began our own Thanksgiving tradition: An eclectic mish-mash of dishes. Although we’re not in Birmingham, and don’t have to make the rounds, we have kept “our” tradition. This year we’re looking forward to the following menu:
I’d love to know your traditions…
Lots of great recipes for the approaching holiday.
Pumpkin cake looks decadent!
Yum! That glaze looks deliciously sweet and sticky—the whole dish looks incredible, in fact!
I hope you enjoy the creme brulee. I think sweet potato will actually taste even better than pumpkin! 🙂
This cake looks great and would please the non-pumpkin pie eaters! I love your tradition. I’m not much of a turkey fan and it’s one of my least favorite things to cook, so I would love to make something else but my family insists!
Ahhh your cake looks so good, I could go for a piece right now! We have a tradition every year when the family gets together. On Thanksgiving, everyone comes to our house!
Your description of your mom’s Thanksgiving dinner made me really hungry, then your version of Thanksgiving menu… wow, amazing menu Shawn! I’m still new to the Thanksgiving Dinner and I have never made the dinner by myself. We’re usually invited to our friends house and they do Cajun style deep frying turkey which is SUPER delicious… I can’t wait to eat it. =) Your pumpkin cake with cinnamon whip. YUM! I have to start losing weight before the holidays. >_< Hehee.
Simply delicious- you have me wishing it was thankgiving day already! Sure wish I was going to be at your house this holiday! LOL!
Shawn, your pumpkin cake looks mouthwatering! Honestly, I’ve never thought of baking with pumpmkin cuz the one’s we get in India are of a different variety and we don’t follow the thanksgiving tradition, but I am beginning to bake with healthy veggies, I’d love your recipe, I couldn’t find it on your post..
Oh my gosh, my boys would be all over your menu! Whole fried chicken AND baby back ribs…neither of them are big turkey eaters, so that would be perfect. But I stick with the traditional. And as long as I have ham and macaroni and cheese they are happy. Your menu sounds delicious and so does your mom’s! And that pumpkin cake…oh my!
